![]() ![]() ![]() Each of these themes are relationally tied to a single word, which appears on the memoir’s first page: “ Pain. There are really four core themes at the heart of this memoir: Parent(s)(ing), racism, language, and religion. Smith now feels to me like an old friend. There is a deep intimacy to Smith’s memoir, made all the more palpable through her voice. Smith narrates the Audible version of her memoir, and this would be my first recommendation. Thus, as I prepared to finally read Smith’s (2015) memoir Ordinary Light, I knew I must also listen. Her voice was~is a healing balm in a noisy, boisterous, clattering world. Though I was an inconsistent listener, on days when I needed some soothing, listening to Smith explain and read a poem brought me solace. ![]() ![]() For several years, Smith hosted a podcast called The Slowdown. At the time, Smith was the poet laureate of the United States, and her voice - so deeply rhythmic, elegant, calming, and motherly - made her seem a wise soul, capable of comfort and compassion. Since I heard her speak as part of the Houston Inprint Margarett Root Brown Reading Series in February, 2016, I’ve had a deeply personal resonance with Tracy K. ![]()
